MAFEX Evangelion Unit 01 packaging

So let’s start with a review of the Evangelion Unit-01 released by MAFEX. Let’s start with the packaging.

Overall it’s a thick box.

In blister pack condition. Includes many optional parts.

MAFEX Evangelion Unit 01 main body

Let’s take it out and start reviewing the MAFEX Evangelion Unit-01. Let’s start with the whole body.

All the way around. The figure is arranged to be quite tall with long legs. Rather than being close to the movie, the design seems to be a hybrid of the manga and TV anime. As someone who has been watching the TV version since I was a child, I really like this style. I also like the light purple color of the coloring.

Head parts. Although the overall figure is cool and three-dimensional, the jaw is misaligned when viewed from the front, the inking is quite rough, and the details are quite rough, which I think is MAFEX quality. The “EVA1” marking on the back of the head is good. By
the way, the jaw does not open and close, and the opening head is included as a separate part.

The chest armor seems to be a lot blacker than gray, and the red is also quite dark.

The waist is narrow. The armor is well sculpted. It also has a unique design with seamless material inside. This is a common feature for other MAFEX models.

There is also a hole on the back for the umbilical cable.

The waist area is also well recreated.

Her arms are thin and long, very Eva-like.

The shoulder armor is also well sculpted.

Markings are also reproduced on the shoulders.

The arm also has the words “EVANGELION TEST-TYPE” engraved on it. This detail is very well reproduced.

There is also wrist armor.

The legs are slender and long. They remind me of the TV version. But the hip joints are loose.

The thigh armor is also no problem.

The shaping around the shins is also nice.

The knee armor can also be separated and moved.

The familiar green armor on the legs.

The soles of the feet are also painted in different colors.

Compared to Bandai’s ROBOT Spirits Evangelion Unit 01. Although they are both based on the Unit 01 from the “New Theatrical Edition,” the style and shape are quite different. The ROBOT Spirits version is probably closer to the style in the movie, while the MAFEX version seems to be conscious of the TV version, with larger shoulders and other features.

ROBOT Spirits Evangelion Unit-01 New Movie Review

Compared to the RG Evangelion Unit 01. Although they appear to be the same size, the shoulder armor of the RG is larger, making the MAFEX actually taller.

MAFEX Evangelion Unit 01 Accessories List

Next, let’s take a look at the accessories for MAFEX’s Evangelion Unit-01. This is a simple gripping wrist part. It comes with left and right hands.

A sword-hand wrist part for use in running poses. Includes left and right.

These are the wide open wrist parts. They come with left and right.

Wrist parts for holding weapons are included on the left and right sides.

Wrist parts holding progressive knives are also included on both sides.

Left and right wrist parts for breaking the AT field are also included.

This is the part that can be replaced to recreate the open lid of the entry plug. The colors are also recreated in great detail.

There are holes in it,

It looks like this when installed.

This is the entry plug. It may be small, but the color reproduction is amazing.

This is what it looks like when you put it in the hole.

There is also the tip of an entry plug that can recreate the state up to a certain point.

In this way, it is possible to recreate scenes such as inserting the entry plug.

This is one of the weapons, the Progressive Knife. The metallic blade is incredibly realistic.

This is a part that allows you to recreate the scene where the progressive knife is taken out of the shoulder armor.

Of course, the pallet rifle is also included. The coloring is more detailed than in the ROBOT Spirits version.

This is a Gatling gun. The gunmetal paint is beautiful. The tip can also be rotated.

The cartridges are also removable, and even the bullets are sculpted and painted, which is amazing.

This is an umbilical cable. It has wires inside, so you can add some expression to it.

The tip is a fairly simple color.

This is what it looks like when actually installed.

It also comes with a PET sheet of the AT field, with a hole in the center so you can recreate the scene of Unit 01 trying to break through.

The familiar MAFEX pedestal is also included, with a support pillar that has one more axis than usual.

An open head part is also included.

The inside of the mouth is painted red. I’m concerned about the eye prints being misaligned.

It is a fairly realistic design.

MAFEX Evangelion Unit 01 Movement Range

Next, let’s look at the range of motion. The neck and shoulders can rotate widely. The shoulders can only rotate a full turn because the shoulder armor is attached to the torso.

Due to the seamless material, there isn’t much movement at the front or back of the waist.

For the same reason, the hips don’t rotate much either.

The legs are spread quite wide.

“Insert entry plug!”

Grrrrrr

So let’s take a look at the action of MAFEX’s Evangelion Unit-01.

It’s nice to see a finished Evangelion that lets you recreate the entry plug insertion scene.

The range of motion is quite excellent except for the waist, so you can perform some pretty cool actions.

When doing a crouching start, your hands don’t really touch the ground.

Running pose is no problem.

Equipped with a pallet rifle.

You can hold it with both hands.

I like the action with a pallet rifle.

Of course, one hand.

This outfit makes you feel like a robot.

Equipped with a Gatling gun.

The Gatling gun is also included, which is quite luxurious.

It’s big, so it’s quite flashy.

Equipped with a pallet rifle and two-handed.

It’s big and nice.

Take out the progressive knife.

There are surprisingly many images of knives being used as well.

The hunched posture looks good.

The stance also has a unique feel.

The first MAFEX model looks pretty good.

It looks like they’re trying to use two.

And then Unit 01 goes out of control.

It definitely has a more TV feel than the new movie version.

The corners are quite delicate so handle with care.

The action goes from robot to monster-like in an instant.

I tried to make it look more like the crawling pose that was used in the TV version.

It’s pretty cool.

Beat up Sachiel from the Real Model Series.

Defeat the AT field.

It’s fun to have an apostle.

It’s interesting that every manufacturer includes this AT field.

Ended up beating Sachiel to a pulp.

This concludes my review of the MAFEX Evangelion Unit-01.
I personally quite like how the overall style is tall and how it seems to combine the new movie version and the TV version. I prefer the visuals to the ROBOT Spirits. However, the hip joints are quite loose, so it’s difficult to support the heavy body. This is a common specification for MAFEX Evangelions.
Also, the sloppy painting, such as the inking, is quite noticeable. I hope they can improve the quality in that regard. The details were sloppy. It comes
with a wide range of accessories and poses, so if you use the base well, you can have a lot of fun with this Eva Unit-01.
